CNC machine tending automation in Ontario

A typical tending project starts with one person loading more than one CNC, and spindle time disappearing whenever that person is pulled away. The project is the load and unload, not a robot brand.

Innovation Peer advises manufacturers from Woodbridge, Ontario. We are not the integrator who interfaces the chuck, the door, and the safety circuit.

Ranges below come from the published example for loading one CNC. They are illustrative CAD planning bands, not a quote for your part family.

Decide whether the machine is the constraint

If the spindle is already full and the operator is only changing a stable part, a loader may be the wrong first spend. If the door waits on the person, presentation is awkward, or one operator is covering two machines, tending is a real project.

The published example separates a smaller step — fixtures and presentation — from automated machine loading. Many shops should price the first before they assume the second.

One machine is a different project from a cell

The published cost example is scoped to loading one CNC. A second machine, a gantry, in-machine gauging, or a shared robot between mills changes the safety zones, the part presentation, and the installed cost. Do not stretch a one-machine band across a two-machine cell.

The related use case on this site is trays in a lighter part band. Heavier billets, chips, coolant, and awkward grippers are reasons to re-open the range, not reasons to invent a new one here.

Facts that change a tending quote

Integrators can only price the interface you describe. These are the usual gaps on a first CNC conversation.

  • Part weight, grip surfaces, and how the part sits in a tray, chuck, or fixture
  • Door cycle and whether the control can be interfaced cleanly
  • Cycle time versus the time a person spends walking, deburring, or checking
  • Who owns chip, coolant, and in-process inspection
  • How many part families must run without a rebuild of the end effector

What the published bands are for

Use them to see whether you are in a fixture-and-presentation conversation or an installed loader conversation. The loader band on the example is an installed scope for one machine. It is not taxes, freight, a new machine tool, or a multi-year service contract.

If finance needs a single number this quarter, the missing facts above are the work — not a tighter slogan.

Published illustrative CAD ranges

Figures are illustrative CAD planning ranges already published on Innovation Peer. They are planning support — not supplier quotes.

Improved fixtures and presentation

Better fixtures, trays, or staging reduce handling time without a robot.

$10,000 – $40,000 CAD (Equipment only (not an installed total))

Illustrative CAD planning band for fixtures and presentation improvements on one CNC. Not a supplier quote.

Included in this band

  • Improved fixtures, trays, or near-machine staging hardware for one machine

Not included

  • Robot cell
  • Machine retrofit
  • Taxes and freight

Automated machine loading

Cobot or industrial tending cell loads/unloads one machine with part presentation and safety.

$120,000 – $280,000 CAD (Installed scope)

Illustrative CAD installed planning band for automating load/unload on one CNC machine. Not a supplier quote.

Included in this band

  • Cobot or industrial tending equipment
  • Part presentation
  • Safety
  • Basic machine interface and commissioning for one CNC

Not included

  • Second machine
  • Major machine rebuild
  • Taxes and freight
  • Ongoing service contracts

Questions

Will a cobot always be cheaper than a fence and an industrial robot?

Not as a rule. Door interface, part presentation, and safeguarding drive the installed number. The published example separates presentation improvements from automated loading so you can see both conversations.

Can Innovation Peer program the CNC or build the loader?

No. We help you clarify the process and the next commercial step. Delivery stays with an integrator or machine-tending supplier you approve.

Is the tray example my part?

Only if your parts actually match that use case. Treat it as a documented project type and a place to see which inputs matter, not as your quote.

Describe one CNC loading job — machine, part, and what the operator is doing instead of keeping the spindle running. The free review is a one-page summary, not a machine quote.
