Material movement in Ontario plants

AMR and AGV planning for an Ontario plant

An AMR or AGV search from an Ontario plant is usually about one painful loop: forklifts and carts between storage and a cell, shared aisles, and a station that stalls when material is late.

A fleet is the last conversation, not the first. The published cost example also includes simpler manual changes and conveyors where the path is fixed. Start with the moves, not the vehicle.

Innovation Peer advises from Woodbridge, in the Greater Toronto Area. We are not the fleet supplier. Ranges below are the illustrative CAD bands already published for internal material movement. The linked example uses fictional plant data. It is not a customer installation.

Name the moves before you name the vehicle

List the routes that actually hurt: origin, destination, what is carried, how often, and who is in the aisle. A plant with one painful loop is a different project from a plant that wants a fleet.

Buying vehicles for every tote is how a first project becomes a building programme. The published example is internal movement between work areas. It is not a warehouse management system, and it is not a promise that vehicles will run on day one.

Manual, conveyor, or vehicle

Improved manual movement is the small band: carts, staging, and discipline when the layout is the problem. A conveyor fits a stable point-to-point path and brings its own installed cost. An AGV or AMR fits when the route, the load, and the traffic rules can be defined — and it is the widest published band of the three because site conditions dominate.

Pedestrian aisles, narrow turns, elevator or door handoffs, and poor wireless coverage are reasons the vehicle number moves. They belong in the plan, not in a footnote after the purchase order.

Inputs that make a material-movement plan real

You can start with a sketch. These are the facts that separate a planning range from a proposal.

  • Load type, weight, and how it is picked up and dropped off
  • Route map, aisle width, and where people still have to walk
  • Moves per shift, including the peaks that stall a cell
  • Wireless coverage and any IT rules for vehicles on the floor
  • What stays on a forklift even after phase one

How not to use the published bands

Do not treat the AGV/AMR band as the price of “automation” for the whole plant. It is an illustrative installed range for the example’s scope. Exclusions on the example — building changes, a full fleet rollout, ongoing service — are part of reading it.

Compare the three approaches on the cost page, then decide whether a free review of one route is the next step.

Published illustrative CAD ranges

Figures are illustrative CAD planning ranges already published on Innovation Peer. They are planning support — not supplier quotes.

Improved manual movement

Better carts, staging, and route discipline before capital automation.

$5,000 – $25,000 CAD (Equipment only (not an installed total))

Illustrative CAD planning band for improved manual material movement. Not a supplier quote.

Included in this band

  • Improved carts, staging, or route aids for indoor moves

Not included

  • AGV/AMR fleet
  • Fixed conveyor civil works
  • Taxes and freight

Conveyor where suitable

Fixed conveyor for high-volume, stable point-to-point flows.

$80,000 – $250,000 CAD (Installed scope)

Illustrative CAD installed planning band for a fixed indoor conveyor path. Not a supplier quote.

Included in this band

  • Fixed conveyor sections
  • Basic controls and commissioning for a stable point-to-point indoor path

Not included

  • Ongoing service contracts

AGV / AMR solution

Automated vehicles move loads on defined routes with human or system handoffs.

$120,000 – $450,000 CAD (Installed scope)

Illustrative CAD installed planning band for an indoor AGV/AMR pilot or starter fleet. Aligned with Innovation Peer sample planning ranges — not a supplier quote.

  • Starter AGV/AMR fleet or pilot vehicles
  • Charging/staging
  • Basic fleet software
  • Commissioning for defined indoor routes

Not included

  • Outdoor yard logistics
  • Major facility rebuild

Questions

Is the sample AGV brief on the homepage a customer project?

No. It is an illustrative example with fictional project data, labelled as such. This guide uses the separate published cost example for internal material movement.

Do I need a finished route map for a free review?

No. Describe the moves that hurt, what is carried, and why a person or forklift is in the aisle. The review names what is still missing.

Will Innovation Peer supply the vehicles?

No. We are not the integrator or the vehicle supplier. Any introduction to a supplier happens only with your approval.

Request a free process review

Pick one material-movement loop in the plant — not a fleet. A free process review will say whether it is worth automating, what is missing, and what to do next.
